NHRC takes cognizance of reports of physical assault on Manipur woman in Delhi's Malviya Nagar

Guwahati: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken suo motu cognizance of the reported physical assault of a woman from Manipur by a group of boys after she objected to their lewd and racial abuse in the Malviya Nagar area of South Delhi.

A notice has been issued to the Delhi Police Commissioner, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.

The report is expected to include the status of the victim's health and the investigation. Reportedly, the incident happened on March 8, 2026.


The Commission has observed that the contents of the report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of the victim's human rights. Therefore, it has issued a notice to the Delhi Police Commissioner, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. The report is expected to include the status of the victim's health and the investigation.

According to the report, carried on March 10, 2026, the incident occurred when the victim was taking pictures with her friend at a park in the area.

The alleged assault of a woman from Manipur for objecting to harassment by a group of men near a park close to the Saket District Court complex in New Delhi on Sunday has evoked a sharp reaction in Northeast India.

The woman was taking a walk in the park when a group of men made inappropriate remarks towards them. When one of the women objected to the comments, the situation escalated and she was reportedly assaulted by the group.
