India's currency in use
India currently has banknotes in active circulation in denominations of Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50, Rs 100, Rs 200, and Rs 500 under the Reserve Bank of India's Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series.India got rid of the Rs 1,000 banknote on the night of November 8, 2016, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a nationwide demonetization.
In an address to the nation, the government withdrew the legal tender status of all existing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes overnight to curb black money, counterfeit currency, and corruption. While a redesigned Rs 500 note was subsequently re-introduced in a new series, the ₹1,000 note was permanently retired and replaced at the higher end by the Rs 2,000 note, which itself was later withdrawn from circulation by the RBI in May 2023.
How to verify claims about new currency notes
