New Parliament's likely inauguration on May 26

The new parliament building is undergoing final touches and is likely to be inaugurated on May 26, the day on which the Modi government assumed office in 2014. The building has been equipped with latest technology.

The building will have a Constitution hall which will showcase India's democratic heritage, a lounge for members of Parliament, a library, multiple committee rooms, dining areas and ample parking space. There are three entrances, namely Gyan Dwar, Shakti Dwar and Karma Dwar. At each entry, figurines of 'auspicious animals' have been placed as 'doorkeepers'. Peacock is the theme of the Lok Sabha chamber and Lotus the theme of the Rajya Sabha chamber. The monsoon session is likely to be the first House session in the new building.

All employees will have a dress code, which will 'showcase the cultural diversity' of the country. Cleaning of civil structures has begun but there is no word from the government on the inauguration of the new building, said those undertaking the construction.


PM Modi laid the foundation stone of the new building in December 2020. It is part of the redeveloped Central Vista. Revamping the three-km road from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate, a common central secretariat, a new office and residence of PM, and a new vice president enclave are part of the project executed by the CPWD. The original deadline was November 2022.
