Nepal to retain controversial map on one-rupee coin featuring Uttarakhand's Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura

Nepal will mint the newly designed one-rupee coin that depicts the controversial map, including the territories of Limpiyadhura, Lipulek and Kalapani, the country's national bank said on Saturday.

Nepal claims the territories as their own, whereas India maintains that these are part of Uttarakhand and has said the issue should be addressed through bilateral dialogue.

Nepal's then K P Sharma Oli-led government in May 2020 included the territories in its official map.


Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) spokesperson Guru Prasad Paudel said that the bank will issue the new one-rupee coin depicting the country's map showing these territories as part of it.

On July 20, the government had approved replacing the Nepal map on the one-rupee coin with a monastery.

However, the government, reportedly coming under pressure from the opposition and the general public, has decided to retain the map on its one-rupee coin.

NRB spokesperson Paudel said that though the central bank has not officially received the new design of the coin, he is sure that it will have the map on it.

However, the size and the metal of the coin will be changed, and it will be smaller and lighter than the previous one, he added.
