A racket that targeted NEET aspirants on the pretext of facilitating their admissions to top medical colleges has been busted. Authorities have arrested a prominent member of the ring and are conducting raids to apprehend other suspects. According to police, the gang may have defrauded approximately twelve students out of several crores.

An officer told TOI that members of the gang targeted NEET aspirants who secured low ranks or failed the entrance exam. They used to promise them admissions to top-ranked govt medical colleges for a hefty sum of Rs 30-40 lakh.

Police swung into action after receiving a complaint from a 21-year-old aspirant. On September 6, the student reported to the police about a fraudulent MBBS admission scheme. He claimed that a woman had contacted him on August 27, offering to facilitate his admission to a government medical college in exchange for Rs 35 lakh.

The woman then introduced the aspirant to Kumar Gaurav, 35, who posed as an agent of a consultancy firm called Sun Shine Asia. Gaurav later met him at a coffee shop in Connaught Place and gave him a list of five govt medical colleges, including Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (Maharashtra), BRD Medical College, Govt Medical College (Uttar Pradesh), Muzaffarpur Medical College and Darbhanga Medical College (Bihar), to choose from. He chose BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur and Gaurav asked him to pay Rs 7.5 lakh as an advance. Gaurav claimed that his name would appear in the third round list or mop-up round.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old student grew suspicious and started recording his conversations with these agents. He was doing this to maintain a record just in case the plan went awry and also to convince his parents to pay such a huge sum of money. However, he and his parents later decided to approach police before making the payment.

DCP (New Delhi) Devesh Mahla subsequently formed a team, which was led by ACP Anil Samota and SHO Sanjeev Kumar, to crack the case.

On Sept 10, the complainant called Gaurav and asked him to meet at United Coffee House in Connaught Place. The team of cops apprehended Gaurav and recovered several incriminating documents and items from his possession, such as 14 credit/debit cards, two Aadhaar Cards, three mobile phones, a voter card and a passport. The accused was arrested.

Police are now probing how the accused got details of NEET aspirants who secured low marks in the exam. The accused is also being interrogated about the identity of his accomplices, the officer added.
