Need to discourage people from buying more cars: Nitin Gadkari

Calling for increasing use of public transport, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said that there is a need to discourage people from purchasing more cars.

“That is a big problem and they should use the mass rapid transport like buses. We need to discourage one person using one car on the road,” he said while speaking at the Mindmine Summit 2022 in New Delhi.

“We cannot increase the width of the road any further in many places. That is the reason there is a traffic jam and problems are there in places like Bangalore,” he added.


Gadkari said that while the centre is trying innovative solutions like having multi layered roads, bypasses and alternative routes on heavy traffic areas, the population and automobile growth are a problem.

He said this while highlighting the issued faced with land acquisition and environmental clearances required for road building. Gadkari said that there is not land left to acquire in cities like Bangalore and Pune so expanding road width is a major challenge there.

The Transport Minister said that people can go on using mass rapid transport such as a trolley bus, and on electric buses.

Highlighting the cost benefit to government institutions that usually make this purchases, Gadkari said, “The cost of electric bus is Rs 1.40 crores, and a trolley bus can be of just Rs 45-50 lakh.”
