The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) issued a notice on Tuesday to the West Bengal Director General of Police, seeking a detailed report within 48 hours, on the alleged murder of a seven-year-old child, whose body was found in her neighbour's home in Kolkata. The commission has suo motu taken cognizance of the matter and is likely to visit Kolkata to inquire into the incident.

"You are requested to investigate/inquire the matter and submit a detailed factual report, along with authenticated copies of the relevant documents to the Commission within 48 hours of issue of this letter," NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo said in the letter. A copy of the letter has also been sent to chief secretary HK Dwivedi. "The Commission has taken suo moto cognizance of the matter u/s 13 (1) 6) of the CPCR Act 2005 which came to notice through web news report... dated 27 March 2023," the NCPCR letter read. The Kolkata police has arrested at least 20 persons linked to the violence that broke out following the alleged murder of the minor. The main accused has also been arrested following the death. According to the primary post-mortem report, the body had a head injury possibly caused by the end of a hammer.
