New Delhi: A man, suspected to be an informer, was attacked and killed by Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, police said on Monday. According to officials, unidentified Maoists attacked the victim, Naga Bhandari, when he had gone to participate in an event in Lingapur village under the Usur police station limits around 11:30 pm on Sunday, an official said. He said Bhandari, a resident of Maredubaka village, was a fair-price shop owner.

Bhandari was killed with an axe, the official said, adding that the police was alerted, and a team was sent to the spot. He said a search operation has been launched in the area to trace the assailants.

Meanwhile, the police on Monday recovered two weapons, several live rounds, detonators and other material belonging to Maoists after an exchange of fire with them in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra near the Chhattisgarh border, officials said.

The exchange took place at three locations and lasted two hours, a release by the Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police office said.
