Naxal attack: Amit Shah, Bhupesh Baghel cut short Assam visit

Shah, who planned to address three rallies in Assam, returned to New Delhi after addressing just one rally in Sarbhog. Shah could not address the rally in Bhawanipur and Jalukbari.

Union home minister Amit Shah cut short his visit to Assam and returned to Delhi on Sunday following the Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh. The All India Congress Committee’s observer for Assam assembly polls, Bhupesh Baghel, who is also the Chhattisgarh chief minister, also rushed to his home state. The third phase of polls in Assam will be held on April 6.

Shah, who planned to address three rallies in Assam, returned to New Delhi after addressing just one rally in Sarbhog. Shah could not address the rally in Bhawanipur and Jalukbari.

Union minister Jitendra Singh tweeted: “Today’s first #Assam rally by HM Sh@AmitShah at Sarbhog, before he cut short his visit as well as other 2 rallies and returned to Delhi...”


A senior Chhattisgarh official told ET: “Baghel has gone back after the attack. He was in Assam addressing rallies and overseeing the party’s campaign.”
