Navi Mumbai shipping firm owners among 8 booked for duping 75 job aspirants of Rs 1.7 cr

Thane: Police have registered an FIR against eight persons, including the owners and staff of a shipping company in Navi Mumbai, for allegedly cheating 75 persons of Rs 1.73 crore by promising them lucrative jobs, officials said on Thursday.

The accused, operating through their shipping company office at Kharghar in Maharashtra's Navi Mumbai township, lured the victims with promises of high-paying jobs. They allegedly collected Rs 1,73,81,400 from the unsuspecting job seekers over the last two months, but failed to get them the promised employment, an official from Kharghar police station said.

When the victims reached out to the company for updates or refunds, the accused stopped responding and cut off all communication.


One of the victims lodged a police complaint on Monday, mentioning the identities of all 75 victims and the amounts each individual had paid to the fraudsters.

Based on the complaint, the police registered the case under sections 318 (cheating) and 3(5) (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the official said.

No arrests have been made so far, the official said, adding that a probe was underway into the case.
