Around 27 lakh employees working in the electricity sector will go on a one-day token strike to protest the proposed privatisation of the Uttar Pradesh power distribution companies (DISCOMs). A statement from the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers said nationwide strikes will be held on July 9. In addition to this, protests will also be held on July 2.

The Committee also sought intervention of the centre to cancel the process of privatization of electricity in Uttar Pradesh. Office bearers of the Coordination Committee will attend a ‘Mahapanchayat’ of farmers, domestic consumers and electricity workers on June 22 in Lucknow to mobilise support in favour of the protest.
