Nana Patekar passed away on Thursday after suffering from a cardiac arrest.
Just three days before his death, actor Nana Patekar had spoken about mortality at a social event in Goa, telling the audience that everyone had to leave someday and that he did not know if he would be there the next day.

Patekar, 76, had made the remarks on October 4 at an event organised by Samraat Club International at Dona Paula near Panaji. He had also remembered his friend and former Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, describing him as someone whose life had been driven by a sense of purpose.

The actor died in Goa early Thursday. He was suspected to have suffered a heart attack, and his body was taken to Goa Medical College and Hospital near Panaji for postmortem.

Speaking at the October 4 gathering, Patekar had reflected on how people should use their time before their lives came to an end.

“We all have to go someday. I don't know whether I will be here tomorrow. That time comes in the life of everyone. But before that time comes (we have to think, whether), am I able to do what I want to do? Have I made the effort?,” Patekar said as quoted by news agency PTI.

Those words, spoken just days before his death, have taken on a different meaning following his passing.

Nana Patekar remembered Manohar Parrikar

During the same event, Patekar had spoken about Parrikar, whom he described as a friend.

Parrikar, who died in 2019, had served as Goa chief minister and later as India's defence minister. Patekar remembered him as a person who commanded respect and had lived with a clear sense of purpose.

“Parrikar was a person about whom one could be proud. He was younger than me. I am now 76, and will turn 77. But he was such a great person that one had to look up to him,” the actor said, according to PTI.

“We are fortunate that such a person was born here. These are people who lived their lives as if they had taken up a mission,” PTI quoted Patekar as saying.

Patekar added that achieving a lot in one's lifetime required that same drive.

Nana Patekar joined Goa performers after the event

The evening had also included a more informal side of Patekar's personality.

After the event, he joined a local troupe and played the traditional shamel, a musical instrument associated with Goa's cultural traditions. He also participated in a dekhni performance, a traditional Goan dance form.

The appearance turned out to be one of Patekar's final public engagements.

Known for his work across Hindi and Marathi cinema, Patekar had built a career spanning acting, writing and filmmaking. His performances had earned him major awards and critical recognition, while his work outside cinema had also made him a familiar figure in social causes.
