Nagpur school, college closed due to heavy rain
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Nagpur and Wardha districts in Maharashtra, warning of heavy rainfall. As a precaution, the administration has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Nagpur on Wednesday, officials said.

Several roads shut as rivers overflow

According to the District Information Office, continuous heavy rainfall has led to overflowing rivers and drains in parts of Nagpur, forcing the closure of some state highways. Waterlogging has also been reported across multiple talukas in the district.

Red, orange, and yellow alerts across Vidarbha

The IMD has placed Nagpur and Wardha under a red alert, while Amravati and Yavatmal are under an orange alert. A yellow alert has been issued for Akola, Washim, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Bhandara, and Gondia districts. These alerts indicate varying intensities of rainfall expected in the Vidarbha region on Wednesday.

Flood-like situation not ruled out

Nagpur Collector Vipin Itankar, in an official order, said, “Many parts of the district have been witnessing heavy rains and the possibility of a flood-like situation cannot be ruled out.” He added that the closure of all educational institutions was necessary “to avoid any untoward incident.”

Rainfall recorded overnight

The Regional Meteorological Centre reported that Nagpur received 172.2 mm of rainfall in just nine hours—from 8.30 pm on Tuesday to 5.30 am on Wednesday. The IMD has warned of thunderstorms with lightning and moderate to heavy rainfall in some areas.

Officials monitoring the situation

Authorities are continuing to monitor the rainfall and water levels in the affected areas. Residents are advised to stay indoors and follow updates from official sources.
