The District Information Office (DIO) of Nanded, located approximately 280 km away, made this confirmation on a social media platform. Earlier, 24 deaths were reported at the Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital in Nanded in the 24 hours between September 30 and October 1. Among these, 12 were infants, according to a top health department official in Maharashtra.
In a social media post, the Nanded DIO provided the following information: "The facts related to the death of patients at Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital are as follows: 24 deaths between September 30 and October 1; seven deaths between October 1 and 2." They reassured the public by stating, "Please do not panic. A team of doctors is ready."
Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Chavan took to the microblogging site on Tuesday morning, saying, "Deaths continue unabated at the hospital in Nanded. Seven more patients, including four children, died since yesterday (October 2) at the Government Medical College and Hospital." He demanded that the state government hold someone responsible for the situation.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra's Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif is scheduled to visit the GMCH in Nanded on Tuesday. Following his hospital visit, he will hold a press conference, according to a district official.
In an official statement released on Monday, the Nanded district collectorate reported that between September 30 and October 1, a total of 24 deaths occurred at the hospital. Among the 12 deceased adults, five were male, and seven were female. The statement detailed various medical conditions and causes of death, including heart-related ailments, unknown poisoning, liver issues, kidney problems, pregnancy complications, and accident cases.
Regarding the deceased infants, the collectorate's statement noted that four of them were brought to the hospital in critical condition. It's worth mentioning that in a 24-hour period between August 12 and 13, 18 patients had died at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, Thane district, which had prompted the opposition to question the Eknath Shinde government.
