A mysterious illness has claimed the lives of 17 children in Udaipur's tribal-dominated Kotra area over the past 30 days, raising concerns among health officials. The affected children, all under five, showed symptoms of fever, cold, and cough before dying within days of the onset of their illness. The Rajasthan health department is investigating the cause, suspecting a combination of seasonal diseases and improper treatment practices, a TOI report stated.

Rapid fatalities spark panic in the region

The most recent death occurred on Sunday when a two-year-old boy succumbed to the illness. His death marked the 17th child fatality in the area within a month. Nika Ram Garasiya, the sarpanch of Ghata panchayat, where the deaths have taken place, described the situation: "The two-year-old was suffering from fever, cold, and cough. He died within two to three days of onset of symptoms. This is what is happening in the village since the last 30 days. The village has lost 17 children. Within three to four days of falling ill, children have died."

Health department investigates possible causes

Health officials have sent investigation teams to the affected area. Dr. Shankar Lal Bamaniya, Udaipur’s chief medical health officer, confirmed that the department is closely monitoring the situation. "Our teams are investigating the reason behind the illness. They will prepare a factual report and provide treatment to the sick children," said Dr. Bamaniya.

Access to treatment in question

Ghata panchayat is located near the Gujarat border, and it has been reported that villagers often seek medical care outside the district. The health department is now looking into the treatment received by the deceased children, including examining the involvement of local and external healthcare providers.

Authorities are urging residents to seek proper medical attention and are working on preventing further deaths as they await the final report from the investigation teams.
