In light of the recent massive earthquake that hit Myanmar and Thailand on Friday, PM Modi expressed concern for the safety and well-being of those affected.

Taking to social media, the prime minister extended his thoughts and prayers to the victims, reaffirming India’s commitment to providing aid in the aftermath of the natural disaster.

"Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand," he wrote in a post on X.


A powerful 7.7 magnitude quake struck central Myanmar, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake, which occurred at 12:50 pm local time (0620 GMT), caused significant damage in the capital Naypyidaw, with roads buckling and tremors felt as far away as India, China, and Thailand. The epicenter was located 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing at a depth of 10 kilometers.

In Thailand, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha declared a state of emergency in Bangkok after the city was severely shaken by the earthquake.

The tremors led to the collapse of a 30-story government office skyscraper under construction in , trapping 43 workers inside. Police and medical officials reported that the building in the northern part of the Thai capital was reduced to rubble and twisted metal within seconds of the quake.

Meanwhile, the earthquale was also felt back in India as the shock reached parts of West Bengal, Manipur and Meghalaya. Residents in Kolkata reported the slight swaying of wall hangings as slight tremors also reached Imphal and East Garo Hills. PTI sources confirmed that there was no damage to property or loss of life in the country.
