Myanmar Earthquake: India launches 'Operation Brahma', first tranche of relief material reaches Yangon
Myanmar Earthquake: India has sent two navy ships to Myanmar with humanitarian aid after a powerful earthquake caused massive destruction in the country. The External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, said on Saturday that Indian Navy ships INS Satpura and INS Savitri are on their way to Yangon port under Operation Brahma.

The ships are carrying 40 tonnes of aid for the earthquake victims. Jaishankar posted on X, "Operation Brahma Indian Navy ships INS Satpura & INS Savitri are carrying 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid and headed for the port of Yangon."

Another tremor shakes Myanmar

Meanwhile, another tremor of magnitude 4.7 struck Myanmar. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the aftershock was recorded on Saturday afternoon.

The NCS posted on X, "EQ of M: 4.7, On: 29/03/2025 14:50:55 IST, Lat: 19.94 N, Long: 95.96 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Myanmar."


India steps up relief efforts

MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal explained the significance of the mission, saying, "Today we launched Operation Brahma. Brahma is a god of creation, and at a time when we are extending a helping hand to the Government of Myanmar, to the people of Myanmar, to rebuild their country in the wake of the devastation, this name carries special meaning."

He added that India has already sent relief through air transport as well. "The first aircraft carrying 15 tonnes of relief material took off at around 3 am from Hindon Air Force Base and reached Yangon at around 8 am IST. Our ambassador was there to receive the relief material and handed it over to the Chief Minister of Yangon."

Apart from relief supplies, India has also deployed rescue teams. Jaiswal said, "Two aircraft with search and rescue personnel, equipment, and canines were sent. One has already left, and the other is in the process of leaving."

No casualties among Indians in Myanmar

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that so far, no casualties have been reported among the Indian community in Myanmar.

Additionally, India’s ambassador to Myanmar is currently in Nay Pyi Taw, coordinating relief efforts as part of Operation Brahma, ensuring aid reaches those in need.

Hundreds dead, thousands injured

At least 1,000 people have died after the 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Mandalay. The US Geological Survey (USGS) has estimated that the death toll could go beyond 10,000, according to CNN.

The earthquake, the strongest in Myanmar in more than a century, caused buildings to collapse even hundreds of miles away. In Thailand, at least 10 people have died, and over 100 are feared trapped under an under-construction high-rise.

Thai royal family offers help

Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn, along with the queen and prince, expressed their "deep sorrow and condolences" to those affected. The Thai royal family has announced that all earthquake victims will be treated under their "royal patronage."
