The BJP-led Municipal Corporation Delhi (MCD) has introduced a house tax amnesty scheme to resolve issues of high taxes and arrears dating back to 2004. Residents can clear dues by paying the principal amount for the past five years or last three ...

Sachdeva said that people will now have to only pay the principal amount of the past five years combined with this year's dues which will clear their dues going back to 2004. If someone had not paid the tax for the past three years they will have to pay only for the last three years. This scheme will clear the dues of property owners whether commercial or residential, in planned regularised, unauthorised and regularised unauthorised colonies up to the last 15 years.
MCD house meeting on Wednesday will see the presentation of the preamble of the scheme. Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh said that people will only need to pay the principal amount due for the last five years, the interest and penalties on that amount is waived off. On the payment of this amount the taxpayer will receive a no objection certificate that they can show to civic officials for streamlining the process.
“ We have the majority in the house so we would be able to pass the preamble of the scheme,” said Raja Singh.
There are 35 lakh properties within MCD limits but only 11.3 lakh pay taxes, this year the revenue generation will be Rs 2100 crore. The scheme which will run till March 31, 2026 is expected to increase revenue for the body like the 2022-23 scheme.
The 2022-23 amnesty scheme brought in Rs 2,417. In 2023-24 the revenue figure stood at Rs 2,137 crore. In 2024-25 the estimated revenue figure is Rs. 2,163 crore against a projected estimate of Rs. 4,000 crore.
AAP Delhi State President Saurabh Bhardwaj has accused the MCD of neglecting their proposal for halving the property tax for properties up to 500 square yards and exempting property tax for properties up to 100 square yards. Instead of listening to our demands, the MCD commissioner has levied this unjustified user charge.
