Mumbai reported on Friday its first case of Guillain-Barre Syndrome, with a 64-year-old woman diagnosed with the rare neurological disorder.

At least five deaths in Maharashtra are suspected to be caused by GBS since January. Meanwhile, the number of reported cases in Pune has risen to 158.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a condition where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nervous system, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and in severe cases, respiratory failure.

As cases of the disorder continued to rise, Union Health Minister JP Nadda chaired a high-level meeting with ministers in Maharashtra to review the situation on February 3.

The meeting was attended by Maharashtra ministers Prakash Abitkar (health), Hasan Mushrif (medical education), and Gulab Raghunath Patil (Jal Shakti). Senior officials from the Union Health Ministry also participated. At least five deaths in Maharashtra were suspected to be caused by GBS, while the number of reported cases in Pune increased to 158.

A situation update was presented by the Maharashtra government, outlining the public health measures taken by the state, the health ministry said.

Nadda reviewed the public health measures being undertaken by state health authorities, including the testing and treatment of patients affected by GBS.

Meanwhile, earlier, a 17-year-old girl died at a private hospital in Assam due to suspected Guillain-Barre Syndrome marking the first such case in Assam for the current season, doctors at the health facility said on Saturday. However, there was no official confirmation from the hospital or the state health department.
