Mumbai Rains: Local trains, buses running normally after torrential rains briefly disrupt life in Maharashtrian city

As heavy rains prompted a brief disruption of life in Mumbai on Wednesday night, the key transport services of local trains and buses are functioning 'normally' today, officials confirmed.

The Central railway CPRO said that trains on the main line are running 3-4 minutes behind schedule because of rescheduled mail express movements and a few cautions but otherwise all local trains are running normally.

Further, bus services continue despite Mumbai roads being waterlogged and affected by torrential rains last evening.



Mumbai was lashed by heavy rainfall on Wednesday, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the city and surrounding districts.


Several areas, including Chembur Ghatla, experienced significant waterlogging, causing widespread disruptions. The city recorded over 200 mm of rainfall in just five hours on Wednesday evening, adding to the challenges posed by the downpour. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as residents brace for further weather developments.

As for today, the Met department has forecasted that Mumbai may experience a 'generally cloudy sky with heavy rain'. The Meteorological Department issued a Red Alert for Palghar and Nashik, and an Orange Alert for Thane, Raigad, and Pune for Thursday.

Schools and colleges were asked to remain shut for today in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Pune, and Pimpri-Chinchwad by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The city saw standstill not just in vehicular and rail operations but also disrupted the air traffic, leaving at least 14 flights diverted.

As of 25 September 2024 and between 8 am and 9 pm, Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall with the highest reported at Paspoli Powai Municipal School (Powai) with 257.8 mm, followed by Mankhurd Fire Station at 239.6 mm and N Division Office with 233.1 mm.

Other notable areas include Nutan Vidyamandir (231.8 mm), Tagore Nagar Municipal Corporation School in Vikhroli (227.6 mm), and Jogeshwari's Trauma Care Centre (180 mm). Lower but substantial readings were observed at Marol Fire Station (154.6 mm) and Malpa Dongri Municipal School (150 mm).

Road traffic was slow, and local train services were delayed due to waterlogging. Heavy rain affected Mulund and surrounding areas the most, causing flooding in low-lying areas.
