"The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Mumbai. In view of this situation and considering the safety of students, all schools and colleges in Mumbai have been declared closed for the afternoon session today, July 4, 2026," the BMC said in a statement.

The civic vody has urged Mumbaikars to step out of homes only if required.
The weather agency earlier issued a Nowcast Warning for three hours starting 9:30 AM, warning of intense spells of rain in Raigad, Mumbai, Thane and Palghar districts.
A spokesperson of the BMC said that the decision was taken keeping in mind the safety of students amid the forecast of extremely heavy rains.
The BMC also appealed to citizens to step out of homes only if necessary as heavy rains continue to lash several parts of the city, he told PTI.
