BMC issues holiday for govt, semi-govt offices amid heavy rains, appeals private firms to work from home
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ordered on Tuesday that all government and semi-government offices will remain closed today, August 19, 2025. This order comes when Mumbai remained under red alert on Tuesday for second consecutive day. Extremely heavy rains continued to disrupt life and work in the financial capital.

BMC has appealed all private offices/establishments to instruct their employees to work from home. It declared that except for 'essential services', all government, semi-government offices, and BMC offices area will remain closed

"All government and semi-government offices in Mumbai will remain closed today, August 19, 2025. Private offices/establishments are requested to instruct their employees to work from home," BMC said in a statement.

It stated that the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in the BMC area (Mumbai city and suburbs) today. Additionally, continuous heavy rain is lashing Mumbai.

"In this context, except for essential services, all government, semi-government offices, and BMC offices in the BMC area have been declared closed today by the Municipal Corporation in its capacity as the District Disaster Management Authority," the authority said.

"Furthermore, all private offices and establishments in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region are urgently requested to instruct their employees to work from home, depending on the nature of their operations, and to avoid unnecessary travel, as appealed by the BMC," the statement read.
