Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the world-class Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT) at Indira Dock. Designed to elevate luxury sea travel, the terminal promises a seamless experience and positions Mumbai as a hub for global cruise tourism.

Scale and investment
The cruise terminal spans over 415,000 sq. ft. and was built at a cost of ?556 crore. The four-level (G+3) complex is designed to handle nearly 1 million passengers annually, making it one of India’s largest maritime infrastructure projects.

Early operations and milestones
Cruise operations quietly began in April this year when Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off the first departures. The terminal now accommodates roughly 10,000 travellers on a typical day, marking a significant milestone for India’s cruise tourism sector.

Designed for comfort and efficiency
The terminal can berth up to five cruise liners at once, ensuring smooth operations even during peak times. It has 72 check-in and immigration counters, a 1,70,000 sq. ft. operational area, and parking space for over 300 vehicles, delivering world-class convenience for passengers.

Modern maritime-inspired architecture
Architecturally, the MICT reflects its maritime setting. A wavy ceiling draws inspiration from the ocean, while interiors follow a minimalist yet functional design. Beyond serving cruise passengers, the terminal offers a public space for leisure, recreation, and shopping year-round.

Part of the 'Cruise Bharat Mission'
The project is a key element of the government’s ‘Cruise Bharat Mission,’ aimed at expanding cruise tourism via ocean, river, and island-based experiences. Authorities plan to handle around 200 ships annually, each carrying up to 500 passengers, strengthening India’s position in global cruise travel.
