Mumbai autorickshaws, taxis set to go on indefinite strike from Thursday

According to media reports, over two lakh autorickshaw drivers and 48,000 taxi drivers in Mumbai are set to go on an indefinite strike from September 15, Thursday.

Commuters in Mumbai could be in for a hard time starting Thursday owing a planned strike by taxi and autorickshaw drivers in demand of a fare hike.

According to media reports, over two lakh autorickshaw drivers and 48,000 taxi drivers in Mumbai are set to go on an indefinite strike from September 15, Thursday.

Taxi and auto drivers will accept whatever hike they are eligible for based on the report of the state transport control committee’s report, The Indian Express reported quoting an office-bearer of the Mumbai Taximen’s Union.


The union is demanding an increase in the minimum taxi fare to Rs 35 from the existing Rs 25. The union said that if the committe offers a hike of Rs 28 or Rs 30, the offer will be accepted by drivers.

Meanwhile, state industries minister Uday Samant has called a meeting with the taxi drivers’ union at Mantralay, Quadros said.

The fare was last revised — to Rs 25 — in March 2021.
