Mr Grumpyji, Zara Sach Sach Kaho: Why fufaji gets upset at in-laws

When fufaji (husband of father's sister) is naraz (upset or angry), it isn't very challenging to handle the situation once the reasons can be identified. The causes are mostly simple: Either he hasn't been served his tea or meals on time at his in-laws' house, or someone has said something unpalatable to him.

Fufa, also known as pisa or piusa in some parts of our country, is a true treasure for his ability to blend in with anyone at the in-laws' home. When he is happy, he acts as the best ambassador for the in-laws, but when he is upset and angry, he spends his time gossiping about the family with father-in-law's brothers and uncles.

In either situation, he appears to be an appealing person - if he is content or pleased, it indicates that the in-laws are performing their duties exceptionally well; but if he is gossiping, it suggests that the 'naraz fufa' is seeking special attention on some matter. Whenever fufaji gossips, he is more than sure that the in-laws will get the gist of the talk.


In several cases, fufaji's narazgi (displeasure) is disclosed by fufi (fufaji's wife) herself. If fufaji is a perpetually troubled soul, he is ignored, and after a while, his concerns are not taken seriously. But when chachaji (father's brother) is infuriated, it turns into a bigger issue for the family. This is something that the household cannot brush aside. After all, chachajis are stakeholders in the family and are privy to the secrets too. This is why fufaji's narazgi becomes a subject of public discourse while chachaji's is taken seriously and attempts are made to fix it. Chachaji's anger can't just be swept under the carpet.
