A family feud over Sunjay Kapur's wealth has reached the Delhi High Court. Karisma Kapoor's children seek their share of the estate. Sunjay Kapur's sister accuses Priya Sachdeva Kapur of seizing control. The court has directed Priya Kapur to discl...
Family feud over inheritance
Reacting to the plea, Kapur’s sister Mandhira Kapur Smith accused her brother’s widow, Priya Sachdeva Kapur, of taking control of the entire estate. She claimed the wealth was meant to be “distributed equally among the families,” but alleged that “one person has come in and taken everything.”Smith went on to say that her mother “doesn’t even have a roof over her head,” adding that the family is still trying to uncover details about the trust set up by Sunjay Kapur.
Court’s directive
On Wednesday, the Delhi High Court directed Priya Sachdeva Kapur to file a full list of her late husband’s movable and immovable assets, along with her reply. Summons have been issued, with written statements to be filed within two weeks and rejoinders a week thereafter. The matter will next be heard on 9 October for consideration of an ad-interim injunction.Smith welcomed the order, saying it would bring “clarity, visibility and transparency” to the case. “I believe in the justice system in India, so I’m hoping it will finally give the family some answers,” she told ANI.
Standing by Karisma’s children
Karisma Kapoor’s children, represented through their mother, have alleged that Priya Kapur forged Sunjay Kapur’s will to gain exclusive control of the estate. Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, representing them, argued that the will was unregistered, never disclosed earlier, and read “in haste” at a Taj Hotel gathering.Highlighting suspicious circumstances, he said the executor admitted learning of the will only a day before its reading, and that it was disclosed by a family employee rather than Kapur himself.
“I stand by them,” Smith said, referring to Karisma’s children. “If anyone knows the relationship they had with their father, it just doesn’t make sense for them not to be part of the will.”
Priya Kapur’s defence
Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar, representing Priya Kapur, countered that the suit itself is not maintainable. He argued that the plaintiffs are already trust beneficiaries and had received Rs 1,900 crore just days before filing the case. With the High Court now involved, the matter has taken on added gravity, turning a simmering family feud into a legal battle set to unfold in full public view.
