Idukki: A house damaged due to an uprooted tree amid monsoon rains, in Idukki, Kerala.
Steady, unrelenting rains lashed Kerala on Monday, throwing life out of gear across several districts. Northern regions, particularly Kannur and Kasaragod, faced severe flooding as rivers overflowed and low-lying areas went under water.

In many parts of Kannur, residents were forced to leave their homes as water levels surged. Some waded through waist-deep water, clutching bags and children, on their way to temporary shelters.

“Our kids and older relatives were sent to safer places yesterday. We’re moving out now because the water hasn’t stopped rising,” said a resident making his way to a relief camp. He added that regular flooding has made daily life unpredictable—schools remain shut and workers can’t reach their jobs.

In the Kakkad area, a major roadway turned into a river overnight. Two-wheeler riders, unaware of the submerged stretch, were seen struggling to push their vehicles through the deluge.

Rail delays, injuries & overflowing rivers

In Kasaragod, swelling rivers like the Thejaswini Puzha prompted warnings from local authorities against entering any water bodies. At least ten families in Vellarikund were moved to camps after floodwater entered their homes.

Further south, in Pathanamthitta district, strong winds uprooted trees. In Malayalapuzha, one man was injured when a tree crashed onto his house during a stormy spell on Sunday evening.

Train services were disrupted across the state. Long-distance and local trains, including the Malabar and Venad Expresses, were delayed for hours due to waterlogged tracks and poor visibility.

Rain & wind intensify across state

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the southwest monsoon remains vigorous over Kerala and Lakshadweep. The heaviest rainfall—21 cm—was recorded in Thennala (Malappuram district), while Vadakara in Kozhikode got 18 cm. Parts of Kasaragod and Kannur reported 15–16 cm of rain.

Of the 127 monitoring stations across the state, one recorded extremely heavy rainfall, with 19 sites reporting very heavy showers and 33 more logging heavy rain. Wind speeds were fierce, reaching 80 kmph in Idukki, and around 60 kmph in Wayanad and Kottayam.

The IMD has issued warnings for continued showers accompanied by gusty winds (up to 50 kmph) in districts like Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Kozhikode, among others, through the next 24 hours.
