During the call, PM Modi reaffirmed India's support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh, according to a statement issued by the MEA.
The PM emphasised India's commitment to supporting the people of Bangladesh through various development initiatives while underlining the importance of ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities in Bangladesh, the MEA said. The two leaders also discussed ways to take the bilateral relationship forward in line with the respective national priorities.
Speaking from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the 78th Independence Day on Thursday, Modi had said, "I hope things will soon be normal in Bangladesh. 140 crore people want that Hindus, and minorities there are safe. We want our neighbouring countries to tread the path of peace and happiness."
Bangladesh's Hindus have faced more than 200 attacks since the sudden ouster of Sheikh Hasina's government. Situation of minorities was discussed during the Indian envoy's meeting with the foreign advisor of the interim government. The interim government in Bangladesh is still struggling to restore law and order with the BNP and radical Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) unleashing violence on citizens and Awami League supporters paying homage to founding father of the country Mujibur Rahman in Dhaka on his death anniversary on Thursday.
