A meeting between Modi and US Vice President Kamala Harris is also said to be in the works.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to hold standalone bilateral meetings with his Australian and Japanese counterparts during his trip to the US next week, setting the tone for the first high-powered physical Quad Summit. He will also be holding his first in-person bilateral meeting with US president Joe Biden.

This will also be Modi’s maiden physical meeting with Japan’s Yoshihide Suga, following last year’s telephone summit, during which they signed a logistics pact to enhance military cooperation. The two are expected to reinforce the growing ties between the countries. The Quad comprises the US, India, Japan and Australia.

Australian PM Scott Morrison is expected to explain the rationale for the AUKUS grouping to Modi. The two have also had a virtual summit and recently held a maiden 2+2 ministerial summit to expand their defence partnership.


The need for a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region and the Afghanistan situation will figure high on the agenda of Modi’s meetings with all three leaders, ET has learnt.

A meeting between Modi and US Vice President Kamala Harris is also said to be in the works.
