PM Narendra Modi on Monday spoke with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to discuss the West Asian situation and exchanged perspectives on de-escalation, peace and stability.

"Good exchange of perspectives with President @raisi_com of Iran on the difficult situation in West Asia and the Israel-Hamas conflict. Terrorist incidents, violence and loss of civilian lives are serious concerns. Preventing escalation, ensuring continued humanitarian aid and early restoration of peace and stability are important. Welcomed the progress in our bilateral cooperation, including on the Chabahar port," Modi wrote on X.



The two leaders exchanged views on the situation in the West Asia region and the Israel-Hamas conflict. Modi reiterated India's longstanding and consistent position on the issue while both sides agreed to remain in touch given shared interest in regional peace, security and stability.

Iran has called for a Brics statement on the issue. Iranian foreign minister Amirabdollahian has written to Brics countries, including India, urging "proactive and constructive intervention by the Brics member countries to halt the attacks in the Gaza Strip."

Over the last few weeks, PM Modi has spoken with leaders of Egypt, Jordan and UAE on de-escalation efforts in West Asia.

Earlier on Sunday, external affairs minister S Jaishankar spoke with his Iranian counterpart on the prevailing situation and discussed the situation in West Asia and the concern of the international community.

"Spoke today with Iranian Foreign Minister @Amirabdolahian. Discussed the grave situation in West Asia and the concern of the international community. Conveyed the importance of preventing escalation and providing humanitarian support. Agreed to stay in touch," Jaishankar said on X following the telephone conversation.

On Saturday, Jaishankar spoke with his Israeli counterpart and reiterated India's firm commitment to countering terrorism, observance of international humanitarian law and a two-state solution.
