Modi Govt working for welfare of poor, backwards, deprived: Amit shah

Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said the Narendra Modi government has been relentlessly working for the welfare of the poor and the backward and deprived sections of society, which has helped protect their human rights. The minister was speaking at an event to mark the foundation day of the National Human Rights Commission.

Shah lauded the NHRC for its work over the last 28 years and for creating awareness among people about their rights. He said a government with absolute majority was formed at the Centre in 2014 after a long gap, and since then it has been doing welfare work for the poor and deprived sections.

According to Shah, after the Modi government was formed, some 100 million families were able to construct toilets at home, which helped protect human rights, especially of women and girls.


The minister said the government helped some 40 million families get electricity connection, while 130 million families were provided clean cooking gas connection which has helped save people from pollution-related diseases. Shah said the central government has built 20 million houses for the poor and 50 million more houses will be built soon. Seven crore people were given financial assistance by the central government directly to their bank accounts, which were opened for the first time.

He said the Centre has launched an ambitious scheme to provide potable water to every household and 20 million families will be given clean water through pipes soon. The home minister said the NHRC, since its inception, has disposed of 2 million cases.
