PM Narendra Modi, hours after Russian Presidential poll results, have sent congratulatory message to Vladimir Putin on his reelection as the President and emphasised that he looked forward to working with him to strengthen the “time-tested Special & Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia”

“Warm congratulations to H.E. Mr. Vladimir Putin on his re-election as the President of the Russian Federation,” Modi said in a post on social media platform, ‘X’.

“Look forward to working together to further strengthen the time-tested Special & Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia in the years to come,” the Indian PM said in his post.

Modi is expected to travel to Russia for the BRICS Summit in October. The two could also meet earlier in July if they travel for the SCO Summit in Kazakhstan.

Putin won a historic fifth term as Russian President in a landslide victory, securing 87.8% of the vote, the highest ever result in Russia’s post-Soviet history.

In January Modi had a telephonic conversation with Putin and decided to create a roadmap for future initiatives.

The two leaders had then reviewed progress on a number of issues of bilateral cooperation in follow-up to recent high-level exchanges between the two countries. It was Modi’s first phone call with a P5 leader in 2024. The January phone call came days after the External Affairs Minister visited Russia and met Putin.

During that call the two leaders positively assessed the developments in bilateral relations and agreed to develop a roadmap for future initiatives to further strengthen the India-Russia Special & Privileged Strategic Partnership.

They had also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. The achievements in practical interaction in such areas as trade and economy, science and technology, energy, transport and logistics as well as cooperation in the Russian Far East were noted with satisfaction during that phone call.
