Mizoram govt to profile 9,501 displaced tribals from Manipur; enrol students in govt schools

There are 3,481 displaced people in Kolasib district, 3,157 in Aizawl and 2,390 in Saitual. Around 473 displaced people have sought shelter in Champhai, Khawzawl, Serchhip, Mamit, Lunglei, Hnahthial and Siaha.

Guwahati: Mizoram government has decided to profile the displaced people from Manipur and enrol children in government schools. Following a month-long ethnic strife, around 9,501 tribals from Manipur are now sheltered in various community halls, churches, government buildings and relatives' houses in Mizoram. These people have taken shelter across 10 districts of Mizoram.

Three displaced persons have died in the Mizoram camps, while two were killed in a road accident near Saitual town while fleeing from their homes in Churachandpur in Manipur.

There are 3,481 displaced people in Kolasib district, 3,157 in Aizawl and 2,390 in Saitual. Around 473 displaced people have sought shelter in Champhai, Khawzawl, Serchhip, Mamit, Lunglei, Hnahthial and Siaha.


The Mizoram government has constituted a high-level committee headed by home minister Lalchamliana on internally displaced persons of Manipur.

Mizoram is also sheltering over 40,000 Myanmar refugees who fled the neighbouring country for fear of being persecuted by the military junta; 772 refugees are from Bangladesh.
