Aizawl, Dec 5 (IANS) The Mizoram government plans to promote Mizo traditional attires by urging the people of the state to wear them more often, officials said on Thursday.
Guwahati: The Mizoram government plans to promote Mizo traditional attire by urging the people of the state to wear them more often. The move is done to evoke pride in their culture.

A senior official said that in order to evoke pride in their culture, the Mizoram government urged all the people, including government employees, to wear ethnic attires more often to promote the community’s traditions, customs and folklore.

The official added, “We have issued a notification once again requesting all, especially government employees including those at Public Sector Undertakings, boards, bodies and agencies to wear traditional Mizo attires at the workplace at least once a week, preferably every Wednesday. This is expected to inculcate closeness to their Mizo culture and tradition, and simultaneously promote innovations in designs and production of cultural attire.”


The official said that wearing Mizo attire at the workplace is voluntary.The notification has requested all administrative heads and heads of all departments to bring this to the notice of all officials and employees under their charge.

In 2022 Assam legislative assembly secretariat has asked the employees to attend office on all working days with Formal Attire only.

The order of Principal secretary of the state assembly had stated,” All employees should attend office on all working days with Formal Attire only (Salwar Suit/Saree/Mekhela-Chador, Formal Shirt Pant and not Casual attire such as T-shirt, Jeans, Leggings etc.). However, traditional dress of any community of Assam should be worn every Wednesday as desired by the employee.”

The BJP led government which came to power in Assam in 2016 tried to promote traditional attire among the state government employees. On the occasion of civil service day in 2017 bureaucrats in Assam broke the conventional dress code and wore the traditional dhoti-kurta during the recently held Civil Service Day.
