Major political violence erupted in Tripura with Communist Party of India (Marxist) offices in different places targeted by miscreants pelting stones and ransacking the office.

CPI(M) office in Agartala was attacked. CPI (M) sub divisional committee office in Melarmath and party’s headquarter on the west Bank of Bikram Sagar lake was attacked. CPI (M) local committee office in Milan Sangha area was also attacked, Bishalgarh sub divisional committee office was set on ablaze.

Several vehicles were damaged and set on fire. Recently there was a clash between CPI(M) and BJP workers in Dhanpur in Sepahijala district.


BJP held a protest rally on Wednesday following an attack on the Saffron party supporters in which six people were injured recently.

Office of a vernacular daily Pratibadi Kalam was ransacked and vehicles of the journalists were vandalised. Three journalists were injured. Office of the CPI(M) mouthpiece Daily Desher Katha was also raided.

The statue of Dasarath Deb, former Chief Minister, was also damaged. Fire tenders doused fire in a couple of places..

CPI(M) leaders alleged police remained silent despite attacks taking place in front of their eyes.

The state is politically charged following a clash between BJP and the CPI(M) workers in Tripura's Sepahijala district on Monday. Former chief minister Manik Sarkar was to address an event at his assembly constituency Dhanpur in Kathalia block of Sepahijala. Attempts were made to stop Sarkar from entering his constituency.

The BJP, along with ally Indigenous People's Front of Tripura routed the Left Front in Tripura in 2018. In the 60-member Tripura Assembly, the BJP won 36 seats and the IPFT eight, while the CPI-M, secured 16 seats.

After the polls there was post-poll violence and statues of communist leaders were attacked.
