Minor teenage girl found hanging from tree; four suspects detained

A minor teenage girl was found hanging from a tree in suspicious circumstances in Harog village of Ramban district in Jammu and Kashmir. The police filed a case and started an investigation into the matter, detaining at least four suspects till Friday evening.

The victim was buried a day earlier after medico legal formalities and the family members were awaiting the medical report.

The incident took place on Wednesday when the victim went to the forest to graze the cattle. When she didn't return home in the evening, the family members along with neighbours started searching for her.


"We searched the whole area for around two hours and then around 9 pm we found her hanging from a tree in suspicious conditions. Her feet were drenched in blood," a relative told media persons in Ramban.

A police official said the investigation was going on and a board of doctors was preparing a report on the teenager's death. "We are investigating whether this was a case of hanging or murder. The family is alleging rape and murder but there is no clarity as of now. We are waiting for the medical report. We won't spare anyone," the official told media persons.

The police questioned the family members on Friday and also scanned their phone records.

"We will wait for the medical report and accordingly decide the future course of action. Police has detained a few people and let's see how seriously cops investigate the matter further," said Talib Hussain, a prominent tribal activist.
