Guwahati: Suspected militants fired several rounds using sophisticated weapons at a Meitei village in Manipur's Jiribam district on Tuesday night. They fled after the armed village volunteers retaliated.

A senior officer in Manipur police, who did not want to be named, said, "No one was injured in the half-an-hour gun battle. Combined security forces have rushed to the area and launched a combing operation to nab the militants."

Police have urged villagers to help security forces in conducting operations and to nab militants.

Manipur has witnessed several violent incidents since September 1, leaving at least 12 people, including two women, elderly persons and a retired soldier dead, and over 20 others injured. Of the 12 deaths, six were killed in Jiribam, inhabited by people from different communities.

Congress has raised serious concern over a viral document, reportedly signed by the CM's secretary, N Geoffrey, claiming 900 Kuki militants have entered Manipur.
