New Delhi: The Union home ministry has asked the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka as well as the Delhi Police to "suitably address" the security concerns of BJP worker S Vignesh Shishir, who has been demanding Z security, citing threats for pursuing cases against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.

In a letter sent out on May 8, 2026, the MHA has stated that Shishir's security arrangements have been examined "in consultation with central security agencies following five emails in four months from him. While asking state authorities to address the matter, the MHA has not taken a clear call on the question of upgrading Shishir's security to Z, leaving it for local authorities to decide.

The outcome of MHA's internal assessment has also not been revealed.

Shishir, who has had a series of legal reversals in his efforts to deem Gandhi's 2024 election victory illegal by questioning his Indian citizenship, has alleged that he is facing threats for continuing with his efforts. He also parallelly launched the disproportionate assets plea against Gandhi at the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad Court, which has asked CBI, ED and other enforcement agencies to look into the matter.
