Mehul Choksi will be in India within weeks: Senior advocate Harish Salve

Fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi may get deported to India within weeks and not months as expected, according to senior advocate Harish Salve.

"I don't have that kind of experience in Dominican courts, but hopefully we should be taking weeks rather than months," Salve told a TV channel.

Reportedly, the Indian government has sought Harish Salve to fight the deportation case in Dominica. The government has, however, not made any announcement on engaging Salve in the case yet.


Choksi, on the other hand, has hired top lawyers from the UK to fight his case to get deported to Antigua and not to India.

The 62-year-old fugitive is wanted in India in connection with a Rs 13,500-crore fraud in the Punjab National Bank (PNB).

Choksi had mysteriously gone missing on May 23 from Antigua and Barbuda where he has been staying since 2018 as a citizen.

He was detained in neighbouring island country Dominica for illegal entry after a possible romantic escapade with his rumoured girlfriend.

His lawyers alleged that he was kidnapped from Jolly Harbour in Antigua by policemen looking like Antiguan and Indian and brought to Dominica on a boat.

Meanwhile, the Dominica High Court has adjourned the bail hearing of fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi till June 11.
