After the first meeting on Thursday, Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma informed that the state government would table an amendment bill to repeal the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act (MRGA), 2021 in the budget session of the state assembly.

North Tura legislator, Thomas A. Sangma has been elected as the new Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Sangma said that earlier an ordinance to repeal the Act was passed. “We are going to put it in the form of a bill as the session is on."


The Government had even issued licences in March last year to set up three casinos which triggered protests and agitations by various organisations in the state. The State Department of Taxation introduced the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021 for the regulations of gaming in the state.

Traditionally there is gambling in the state with 'teer' or traditional archery games. However, the state government is not getting revenue from this informal betting.

North Tura legislator, Thomas A. Sangma has been elected as the new Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly unopposed during the special session of the Assembly held here on Thursday.

Sangma allotted portfolios to members of his Council of Ministers, he kept departments like Home (Political), Finance etc., with him.

The MDA 2.0 government has decided to appoint three spokesperson of the Cabinet.

Three spokespersons of the Cabinet include Ampareen Lyngdoh, Paul Lyngdoh and Marcuise N. Marak.
