"It is being processed": Karnataka govt sources on cancellation of MP Prajwal Revanna's diplomatic passport

Karnataka government sources on Thursday said that the Ministry of External Affairs is processing the cancellation of Janata Dal (Secular) MP Prajwal Revanna’s diplomatic passport.

The MP from Hassan has been accused of sexual harassment of multiple women. Despite the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the Karnataka government to probe the matter, Prajwal remains on the run and has evaded legal authorities. The SIT had issued several Look Out Circulars and notices under 41A CrPC.

If the MEA cancelled Prajwal's diplomatic passport, it would become impossible for him to stay on in a foreign country and would be forced to return.


The Karnataka government had filed for the cancellation of Prajwal's diplomatic passport on Wednesday.

The case history

The FIR against Prajwal, the grandson of former Prime Minster HD Deve Gowda, includes charges such as rape, sexual assault, disrobing women, and forcibly video-graphing sexual acts to intimidate the victims.

A Special Court for Elected Representatives issued an arrest warrant on Saturday against Prajwal following an application moved by the SIT.


Earlier this month, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Revanna travelled to Germany on a diplomatic passport and did not seek political clearance for the trip.

"No political clearance was either sought from or issued by MEA in respect of the travel of the said MP to Germany," Jaiswal had said.
