The new firefighters will undergo six months of intensive training at various centers before they are assigned to their designated fire stations. This training program will cover a range of topics, including the science of fire, breaking through locked structures, and mastering the latest firefighting equipment. Emphasis will be placed on residential fires, which account for over 60 per cent of fire-related casualties.
The recruits come from various educational backgrounds, including 153 BA graduates, 44 individuals with Industrial Training Institute (ITI) certification, and 24 BSc graduates. Additionally, some hold degrees such as MBA, BCA, Mass Communication, and LLB. This diverse group of skilled professionals marks a milestone for the DFS, as it is the first time such a large number of qualified individuals have joined the department.
Deepak Yadav, a 29-year-old MCA graduate, was inspired by his uncle, Madan Singh, who is currently stationed at the Najafgarh fire station. Previously working as a senior executive at a private firm and a tutor, Yadav is excited about the adventurous nature of firefighting and looks forward to his first operation. Chirag, a 28-year-old BTech graduate, sees firefighting as a personal challenge and aims to excel in high-level DFS exams. Another firefighter expressed the desire to serve society through this job.
Atul Garg, the director of DFS, expressed his confidence in the new recruits and their educational backgrounds. He believes that their qualifications will greatly enhance the capabilities of the department, both in emergency response and the implementation of new technologies. Last year, DFS received 15,610 fire-related calls, resulting in 59 fatalities and 689 successful rescues.
