Guwahati: Mass protest was held in Manipur’s Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur districts against Waqf Amendment Act.

Curfew was clamped for an indefinite period in the entire Lilong Assembly constituency in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Monday a day after a mob set the house of BJP minority morcha’s state President, Md Asker Ali, on fire for supporting the Wakf Amendment Act.

Thoubal District Magistrate (DM) A. Subhash Singh on Monday said that Thoubal district Superintendent of Police (SP) has reported that on Sunday, late evening, an approximately 7,000 to 8,000-strong mob armed with lathis and stones stormed into the house of Md. Asker Ali of Lilong Sambrukhong Mamel and set it ablaze.

At Kwakta in Bishnupur district, over 5,000 demonstrators—including women in burqas and children—marched on Tuesday. In Imphal East’s Khumidok area, around 500 people formed a human chain at the local bazaar.

Kshetrigao MLA, Sheikh Noorul Hassan condemned the central government for passing the Act without consulting stakeholders. “The Wakf Amendment Act 2025 is unjust and deeply insensitive to the sentiments of the Muslim community. It must be repealed immediately to restore trust and communal peace".

The National Peoples' Party (NPP) MLA said that he will move Court against the act. Hussain claimed that on April 5 he was attacked by drug mafias, and he has sought protection from the government.
