Mansukh Mandaviya calls for greater global labour mobility to boost India growth

New Delhi: Labour and employment minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Friday called for discussions on international labour mobility, saying it is significant for India's economic growth through remittances and for fulfilling the aspirations of the country's youth.

"There is a need for coordinated efforts by the Centre and states to create a comprehensive platform for international labour mobility, supported by appropriate financial and digital infrastructure, so that Indian workers can access global opportunities while enhancing India's credibility on the global stage," he said while addressing the National Conference on Building and Other Construction Workers.

The minister emphasised that "shram shakti" (labour power) is integral to the development of a nation and plays a vital role in nation-building. He said social security and welfare of the workforce is therefore fundamental to national development.


He said there is a need to explore measures that can provide workers with greater dignity, honour and self-respect, including the possibility of providing pension support to workers. Highlighting the growing global demand for skilled and semi-skilled workers, Mandaviya underscored the need to prepare India's workforce for benefiting from these emerging opportunities.

India has more than 70 million construction workers and the building and construction worker cess corpus stands at about ₹77,000 crore.
