Union home minister Amit Shah on Thursday said that youths of Manipur won maximum prizes at the five-day Unity Utsav organised by Assam Rifles.

Speaking at an Assam Rifles event here, he said that considering the popularity of sports in the northeast, PM Narendra Modi has decided to establish the country's first sports varsity in Manipur.

Shah noted that there has been a significant change in the northeast's law and order situation.

He said violent incidents have reduced by 70%. Shah said: "More than 220 ethnic groups and more than 160 tribes reside in our northeast, more than 200 dialects and languages are spoken, more than 50 unique festivals are celebrated, more than 30 traditional dances and more than 100 different cuisines exist in the region." The northeast should step forward and contribute to the country's development, Shah said.
