The initiative began on May 31, 2023, when former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh made an appeal to the people of Manipur to surrender firearms looted
from security forces and police armouries.
It may be recalled that Singh had emphasised the importance of maintaining law and order and warned of strict legal action against those found in unauthorised and illegal possession of arms and ammunition.
In a signed statement, he had urged citizens to lift road blockades to facilitate the free movement of security personnel and relief materials, ensuring the delivery of essential supplies to affected areas.
Singh's appeal, the people of Manipur demonstrated their commitment to peace and stability. Prior to Singh's resignation as Chief Minister on February 9, 2025, a total of 3,422 firearms had been voluntarily handed over to the authorities and police stations. a total of 3,422 firearms had been voluntarily surrendered to the authorities/police stations.
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla reiterated the appeal on February 20, 2025, urging citizens to surrender any illegally held firearms. Around 700 firearms being handed over to various police stations. Notably, the Arambai Tenggol contributed significantly to this effort by surrendering 246 firearms, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing campaign.
Both appeals have produced substantial outcomes, out of 6020 firearms which were looted from police stations and armouries, over 4,100 firearms have been surrendered to the relevant authorities till date.
