Manipur violence: Timely deployment of Central Security Forces could contain the situation, says Governor

Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey said the timely deployment of Central Security Forces including CRPF, could contain the situation from bad to worse.

Akhilesh Prasad Singh, newly appointed Inspector General, CRPF, Manipur and Nagaland Sector met Governor of Manipur at Raj Bhavan on Thursday.

The Raj Bhavan stated that the IG, while informing the Governor that he has newly joined as IG, CRPF, Manipur and Nagaland Sector, said he is already well aware of the current crisis arising out of the ethnic clash.


Further, the IG informed the Governor that he will extend his fullest cooperation from his side to restore peace and tranquillity in the State which was warmly reciprocated by the Governor. Governor said, the timely deployment of Central Security Forces including CRPF, could contain the situation from bad to worse.

The Governor urged the IG to extend assistance to the violence affected people who have been taking shelter at different relief camps both in the Valley and Hill Districts.

On Friday several women groups in Manipur announced a civil disobedience movement. They alleged Paramilitary forces are biased.

At least 160 people have been killed and several hundred injured since ethnic violence between the Meitei and Koki-Zo community broke out in the state on May 3, when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
