New Delhi: Supreme Court on Wednesday extended the tenure of a three-member committee headed by justice Gita Mittal (retd) till July 2026. The committee is currently handling several humanitarian aspects of the ethnic violence in Manipur.

A bench of CJI Surya Kant and justice Joymalya Bagchi agreed to grant the extension to the panel. Senior advocate Vibha Makhija, the amicus curiae in the case, apprised the bench that the tenure of the committee had expired in July 2025. She added that so far, 42 reports on various aspects have been submitted by the committee from time to time, and more would be submitted soon.

Considering the same, the bench granted the extension to the committee till July. The committee was constituted by the apex court in August 2023 to address the humanitarian concerns stemming from the ethnic clashes in Manipur.
