Manipur violence: Over 60 killed since early 2026, N Biren Singh says

Guwahati: Former Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh said that more than 60 people have died since early this year and that the cycle of violence remains unchecked.

Singh stated on X, "MORE THAN 60 DEATHS SINCE EARLY THIS YEAR, AND THE CYCLE OF VIOLENCE CONTINUES UNCHECKED

The killing of Rocky from Chaowainamai village and Kumar from Laii Shirafii village in Senapati district is a matter of grave concern. Armed militants entered their home and shot them dead while they were asleep. These were civilians who deserved to live without fear.


How long are we going to keep counting bodies instead of holding those responsible accountable and bringing the deteriorating law and order situation under control?

I extend my deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and the people of the affected villages. May the departed souls rest in peace."

A 49-year-old man who was injured in a gun attack by suspected militants in Manipur’s Senapati district a day earlier died at a private hospital on Sunday, officials said.

Suspected militants had shot dead two Naga civilians and injured two others in Senapati district on Saturday.

Sani died at around 3 am, officials said. His body was subsequently taken to Senapati district hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025, which was revoked in February this year.

At least 306 people have been killed, and 49 remain missing in the ethnic violence that has gripped Manipur since May 2023, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam told the state assembly on September 3, 2026.

More than 60,000 people were displaced after ethnic violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities on May 3, 2023. The violence erupted after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
