Guwahati: At least four people were killed and several others injured in separate incidents in Manipur in the last 24 hours. The killings have sparked protests, and Imphal city has come to a standstill. Angry locals placed two bodies outside the chief minister's residence in Imphal, which the police forcibly removed.

In the first incident, violence erupted during a musical event in a locality inhabited by Meiteis and Pangal Muslims. A senior police official said that there were stone-pelting and gunfire. Several people were injured. A 24-year-old man later succumbed to bullet injuries.

In another incident at Khamenlok in Imphal East district on Monday, at least three villagers, who had gone to collect firewood in the nearby hills, were shot dead by suspected militants. Three others were also injured in the attack.

Officials said that villagers marched towards the CM's high-security bungalow in Imphal, carrying the bodies of the victims. The agitated crowd deposited the bodies there, prompting the police to fire tear gas shells and resort to lathi charge to manage protesters.

The victims were identified as Arubam Ronil, Lairenlakpam Inaobi and Kshetrimayum Sushil.

Chief minister Y Khemchand Singh chaired a security meeting at the Cabinet Hall of the Chief Minister's Secretariat. He directed officials to strengthen security measures in vulnerable areas. The CM strongly condemned the killing of innocent civilians by armed miscreants.
